Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship Grading and Evaluation PolicyThe final grade will be based upon a student's performance in all facets of the clerkship. Our goal is not to award a certain percentage of grades in a given category, but to insure that each student achieves a basic level of competency in women's health. There will be a mid-clerkship evaluation with the site director at week 4 of the clerkship. This is not part of the grading process, but rather is meant to provide constructive feedback and give direction. Areas for improvement should be addressed with the student's site director and/or mentor. Ask for feedback from your resident and attending throughout the clerkship. Specific requirements for each evaluation component are as follows: 1. Clinical Performance and Professionalism Evaluation (50 points) Faculty and residents from each service on which the student rotates will fill out an evaluation form. In addition, the student may request evaluations from additional faculty members or residents, and submit them for use in assessing the final clinical grade. Each site director will determine the final cumulative CLINICAL PERFORMANCE grade.
2. Written Exam (20 points) A written final exam will be given the last Friday morning of the clerkship. This test will be a National Board of Examiners Subject or "Shelf" exam. The passing score is based on the mean score and SD from the past 3 years of national data. A failing score requires that the student retake and pass the exam.
3. Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) (20 points) An OSCE will be given the last Friday afternoon of the clerkship. This will consist of six stations and last approximately 90 minutes. The OSCE is structured to assess the knowledge application, clinical skills (physical exam, patient communication and counseling, developing differential diagnoses and plans of management) and information literacy. Failure to pass the OSCE will require a retake of the exam.
4. Clinical Passport, Observed H&P, Attendance at Didactics and Peer/Nurse Evaluations (10 points) Each student must fill out a tracking form ("Clinical Passport") that documents exposure to and participation in various reproductive health problems and procedures. Residents or faculty members must sign off on basic competencies. In addition, each student must complete an observed reproductive health history and physical exam, and have a separate form filled out by the resident/faculty member. Each student will receive the full amount of points for completing the passport document, observed H&P, and attending the professional patient program and 80% of lectures (excluding the week of night float). Each student is required to hand out two professionalism evaluations to nurses on Labor and Delivery or the Gyne floor/OR or the PAC clinic. Each student rotating in a "team" must fill out a clinical performance evaluation for each member of their team. Failure to submit these documents or to attend required sessions will result in a deduction of points or no points being awarded. Nurse/peer evaluations will not be used to calculate the Clinical Performance grade.
Final GradesFinal grades will be determined by the clerkship director and will awarded based on the following approximate point distribution: Honors: 85-100 High Pass: 78-84 Pass:60-78 Fail: <60 Students will receive a final grade, a narrative for the MSPE, a summary of strengths/weaknesses, and their individual Clinical Performance, Shelf and OSCE scores with means, ranges and standard deviations for the group. OSCE feedback will be given. Peer and Nurse evaluation comments will be provided as well. Students are welcome to meet with the Clerkship Director to review their performance after grades have been submitted. Individual remediation plans will be developed for students who fail the clerkship. Students who fail either of the exams will be required to retake the exam and should consult with the clerkship director for suggestions for studying/remediation prior to retaking the exam. |
