All over the world, the accessory most commonly associated with physicians is the white coat, the history of which you may find interesting.

By the mid-19th century, science had proven many of medicine’s interventions to be worthless, and hence medicine’s reputation was severely compromised. Whereas scientists were admired as harbingers of advancement and moderation, physicians were regarded as quacks and cultic healers.

In desperation for an improved image, medicine turned to science. After all, it was thought that the sophisticated laboratories that invented such amazing instruments as the wireless telegraph could possibly do something helpful for medicine. In an effort to depict themselves as scientists, physicians borrowed the beige laboratory coat as their uniform, quickly opting for white versions due to the connotations attached to the bright and pure color. This was a welcome change to the prevailing and intimidating black robes that physicians wore at the time. Hospitals were no longer hopeless centers for the dying but rather sacred houses for healing. The white coat brought hope with it and quickly came to symbolize medicine’s highest virtues.

For years, at the beginning of each academic year, incoming medical students at Northwestern have joined the medical community by reciting the famed declaration of Geneva as part of the Founders' Day Ceremony. At 2:30 p.m.on Friday, August 28, 2009, each of you will be invited to don your white coat for the first time at the ceremony.

At this time, we need your coat sizes to prepare the white coats for your arrival.  Please complete the order form below no later than July 20th.
