The current grading system in the clerkships is a Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail system. - All students who meet the criteria for consistent excellent performance specified by the clerkship result in a grade of "Honors". For the last academic year this varied from 25-37% in the required M3 & M4 required clerkships.
- A grade of "High Pass" identifies students who have distinguished themselves with excellent performance that did not quite meet the standards for the "Honors" grade. For the last academic year this varied from 19-40% in the required M3 & M4 required clerkships.
- A grade of "Pass" signifies that a student has completed the objectives of a clerkship and can be assumed to be competent and ready to move on to the next stage of clinical training. For the last academic year this varied from 35-49% in the required M3 & M4 required clerkships.
- A grade of "Fail" identifies those students who have not adequately met the objectives of the clerkship and requires that the student repeats a portion or all of the rotation. Successful completion of the repeated clerkship will result in the assignment of a final grade of "Pass Repeated Course". In some isolated cases, a student who only needs limited remedial work to meet the objectives of the clerkship will receive a final grade of "Pass after Remediation".
Each clerkship uses a specific combination of evaluation criteria to determine student grades. Please refer to specific clerkship materials to identify the components and corresponding percentages used to assess the students and derive clerkship grades. In elective clerkships, only the grades of Honors, Pass and Fail can be assigned. In some electives, the clerkship director will assign the final grade of Pass or Fail. Failure of multiple clerkships will be reviewed by the Student Promotions Committee and considered grounds for dismissal from medical school. |
