Sara Patrawala, MD Class of 2010 Feinberg International Health Fellowship Awardee Baroda, India Summer 2007 Project title:“Contrasting Attitudes and Independent Risk Factors for Prenatal Care in Affluent and Disadvantaged Clinics in Baroda, India.” I gained insight on how medical care is administered in the setting of a developing country. I interacted with the women that attended the clinic to get an idea on how they viewed their care. I also experienced the traditions, views, and practices of another culture.
I took away several important lessons from this experience. The first was regarding research methods. My research plan did not exactly pan out as expected once I arrived in India and I had to make some quick onsite changes. I learned the value of flexibility in the field and that what looks good on paper in Chicago does not necessarily work in India.
